1.How did you get the job you have now?

Following two rewarding years as Assistant Director for the Clinical Laboratory at the University of Kansas Hospital, I accepted a position as Business Operations Director for Patient Care Services. This position afforded me the opportunity to work intimately with nursing leadership and clinical staff providing financial oversight and project management. In October of 2005, I accepted the position as the Director of Clinical Laboratory Services. My experience in laboratory leadership combined with my education in healthcare administration prepares me well to succeed in this role.

2.What about your CLS education/background helps you most in this job?

Profound understanding of laboratory operations, ability to problem solve and utilize critical thinking skills.

3.Describe your typical day.

A typical day is filled with operational project meetings, managing and decision making combined with coaching and mentoring staff. The ability to multitask and prioritize is essential in managing the daily operational issues and challenges of the clinical laboratory. Additionally, a great deal if time and focus on projects and process improvement initiatives is a responsibility of this position.

4.What do you like about your job?

I enjoy every aspect of my job. It is both challenging and rewarding and I enjoy working with all levels throughout our organization.

5.What advice do you have for people who want to do what you do?

Beyond the basic CLS education and experience, engage in leadership training whenever possible.
